Cuica hails from Rio de Janeiro, raised on MPB, tropicalismo, and funk carioca. Uprooted into midwest America she found soul 45s which led to hip hop and back again to baile funk.  She now resides in Portland, Oregon~ a pillar of Mississippi Records, working on vinyl and tape releases and keeping a firm foot in the global bass culture of Brazil, Africa, and Latin American diaspora.  Her sets vary from all soul 45s, golden era hip hop, cumbias of all sorts, and club bangers from the tropics.

Cuica has been holding down several residencies over the last few years with nights dedicated to 60's girl groups, rare soul, Afro-Brazilian obscurities, and some special one off nights of classic doo wop, film screenings and international experimental sounds. She co-hosted a radio show on XRAY.fm where she explored electro chaabi, Turkish psych, Ye-Ye, Cambodian synth,  Rai music from Algeria, Bhangraton, and other global tunes.

Heavily invested in the future of women in music, Cuica has spent many years supporting Rock n Roll Camp for Girls and was involved in setting up a music camp in Bahrain.

Cuica continues to expand into unfamiliar musical regions as well as the deep history of overlooked musical traditions.  She's currently working on some upcoming releases on Mississippi Records as well as collaborations with label buddy Sahel Sounds.  You can find her behind the counter at Mississippi Records or at a local club, sharing music with the people.
